Building a Brand is Easy – Just Ask AMC’s The Pitch!

I was watching an episode of AMC’s television program The Pitch today. In the show, two dueling advertising agencies pitch campaigns to a prospective client and at the shows conclusion one is chosen as the winner. In this episode a junk removal company, College Hunks Hauling Junk, was looking to launch a campaign for their new moving service. College Hunks Hauling Junk was founded in 2004 and has 47 franchises. One of the agencies, Fletcher Rowley (based out of Nashville), when strategizing their campaign, zeroed in on the name College Hunks Hauling Junk. To them it was essential that the…

3 Keys to Being Memorable – Repetition, Repetition, Repetition

In eleventh grade, we had to memorize a soliloquy from Hamlet and I couldn’t remember it. No matter what I did, nothing worked. I needed help, so I asked some friends for advice. One suggested that I think of visual cues to help it stick in my head. No, didn’t help at all. Another said put the words to music and it’ll stick in your head. Nope, no dice. I was at a marketing seminar recently, and one of the speakers (a very well…

Getting to How – 3 Questions to Start Every Marketing Campaign With

What I’m about to write may seem obvious, but too few people actually do this before starting their marketing campaigns. Often, we marketers jump into things when we create a marketing campaign – we think of what radio or TV stations we’re going to run our ads on, which music bed we should use or if the talking dogs in the spot should be bulldogs or goldendoodles… While these questions may be valid (especially the age old bulldog vs. goldendoodle query – and answer by the way is and always will be bulldogs), there are 3 basic questions that NEED…

What I Think of Focus Groups

I was at Subway the other day and wasn’t sure which sandwich I wanted to order. I was torn between a foot long turkey and a steak and cheese (neither was the Sub of the Day – which would have weighed my decision). The Sandwich Artist (kudos to the Subway Marketing Team for coining that title) asked me which one I wanted and I had no answer for them. Tumbleweeds… I was stuck. (more…)
